About
Argosy's Empress Casino opened on June 16, 1992 as a riverboat casino on the Des Plaines River in Joliet, Illinois, with an Egyptian theme that featured pyramids and a sphinx-like façade. It was destroyed by fire on March 20, 2009 and reopened 97 days later on June 25, 2009 as the Hollywood Casino Joliet under Penn National Gaming, abandoning the Egyptian theme for an art-deco Hollywood styling. The riverboat operation closed permanently on July 29, 2025 after 33 years on the water. A new $185 million land-based Hollywood Casino Joliet opened on August 11, 2025.
