About
Villa Eugenie, today the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, was built in 1854 at the request of Napoleon III as the imperial summer residence. Empress Eugenie de Montijo had championed the Basque coast as the imperial courts retreat, hosting royalty including Queen Isabelle of Spain, Leopold II of Belgium and Edward VII through the 1860s. The Empress inherited the property in 1873 and parted with it in 1881, after which it became Hotel Palais-Biarritz in 1893 and Hotel du Palais in 1903. Architect Edouard-Jean Niermans enlarged the building in 1905, designing it in an E shape in tribute to Eugenie.
