About
The Municipal Casino of Cannes was a historic gaming venue near Jetee Albert-Edouard at the start of La Croisette, opened in 1907 and extended after the First World War to host society events. The council-run casino became internationally significant in 1939 when Cannes signed the contract to stage the International Film Festival, and its richly decorated thousand-seat hall hosted the inaugural 1946 Cannes Film Festival. The casino was demolished in 1979 and replaced by the new Palais des Festivals, which became the permanent home of the festival. The site is now part of the Cannes festival district at the heart of the Croisette.
