About
The Newport Casino is a historic Shingle Style athletic and social complex in Newport, Rhode Island, built in 1879 for newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr. and designed by McKim, Mead and White. It served as the original home of the US National Tennis Championships from 1881 to 1914 and now houses the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The term casino here refers to its historical meaning as a recreational social club and not to gambling. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
